The Bernard Eckert Saloon was operating in this location by 1865, and remained in business here until 1881. Mrs. Teresa Eckert operated a saloon here in 1882-83.
The James H. Corbett Saloon was in business here from 1884-1918, until Prohibition necessitated a change to soft drinks. After that short-lived business closed in 1920, the building housed Charles Biel's meat market from 1921-24, and John C. Gonder's Bakery from 1925-38.
The building is perhaps best known, though, as the long-time site of Rookie's Bakery, a New Albany institution that now operates downtown on Pearl Street. Rookie's, famous for its 'Little Flower Butter Wafers' was in business here from 1941 until the late 1990s.
The current owner has undertaken an extensive rehabilitation of the building, adapting it for shoe repair and sales.
